Wanna keep your sexiest body part in shape? Staying in shape is tough and it takes a lot of work and commitment. But, ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you something, if you really want to be as sexy as you can be, there is one part of our body that tends to be neglected and one that needs to be worked on a daily basis: your brain! You think I am joking, right? Surprisingly enough, a lot of what you do for your brain will also benefit many aspects of your life, including your physical well being.

We worry so much about our bodies and how we look on the outside, which is important, don’t get me wrong. However, there is nothing more attractive than someone who is smart, can talk about pretty much anything, is traveled and has a formed opinion about a variety of topics. Trust me, I understand that looks are important and very much appreciated but looks eventually fade and, in the end, what’s left is what we have learned, experienced and lived. A combination of intellect, good manners and good looks is truly the definition of sexiness. Yes, I am a sapiosexual (one who is attracted or aroused by intelligence in others) and proud!

Here are 5 things you should consider doing to keep your brain active and in shape:

1- Learn something new every day

There are no rules here. Pick a topic that may be of interest to you and read about it or talk about it with an expert in the subject matter. Do you want to learn a new word? Choose a letter and use the dictionary. Do you want to learn about different religions? There are so many out there so pick a few and do some digging and learn about them. Do you want to focus on your image? Why not learn a little about fashion, make up and elegance? The point here is, no matter what interests you, learn something new and keep your brain active. No one ever said learning has to be associated with what we learned in school or something that makes us smarter. Learning is about expanding your horizons so start thinking about what you like, what you don’t like, what you are curious about and what you know absolutely nothing about. This is not only fun but it can be extremely exciting. Once you start learning new things you will start seeing the world and things around you a little different. And, wait for it, you will start coming across as well-rounded and yes, extremely sexy.

2- Read, Read, Read

No surprise here, reading is food for your brain. You may not be that big into reading but you have to start somewhere. The great thing about reading is that you can literally choose the world you want to be a part of for that month, week or a couple days. Try reading one book per month and you will slowly see that you will become a better reader who will eventually read one book a week. You can go from novels, to fiction, non-fiction, biographies, you name it. You may not like reading but accept it as being essential to your well-being. Once you get used to it, trust me, you won’t look back. This is actually a great conversation starter: “what was the last book you read”?

3- Travel

There is nothing more fun than learning through travel. It doesn’t matter if it’s a long vacation or a weekend getaway, traveling is entertaining, enriching and it expands your horizons on so many levels. When you go somewhere different than where you live you see different landscapes, different ways of living, different ways of eating and dressing, you learn about culture and about respect. Why respect you may ask? Because through travel you discover that there is more than what we were taught where we grew up. Traveling has the power to make one become less ethnocentric and more accepting of differences, hence less judgmental. If you are open to new experiences, travel changes your perspective in life and it changes you. Don’t have a partner? Who said you need one? Traveling alone is one of the best gifts you can give yourself! You can learn a lot about yourself and you can strengthen (or develop) amazing self esteem. Don’t have the money? Look at your budget again. Maybe drop the daily coffee or something that is not really a necessity. Trust me, you will not regret this.

4- Learn a Foreign Language

It is proven by research that people that speak more than one language are smarter and more open-minded. Aside from being a key differentiator when looking for a job or being accepted at a certain university, speaking another language also gives you insights into other cultures. According to the New York Times “speaking another language can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age”. If you learn one language, it is much easier to learn a second or third or more. How fun would it be to be able to at least be able to have a certain level of comfort in communicating when going to other countries? Being in the U.S. you don’t even need to go that far considering the large number of foreigners that live and work here. Don’t have the time? Please, what about that long commute? Instead of listening to talk radio that doesn’t add anything to your life, buy audio books and start learning your favorite language.

5- Exercise

Well, it turns out that to keep your brain in shape you also need to exercise. There you go! Not only will you be smarter but you’ll look good and tighter, too. Exercising releases different chemicals to your brain that you don’t get from anything else, including Endorphins and growth hormones. So, if you are not already, hit the gym and work out those muscles.

Even if you are not looking to being the sexiest thing alive, there is nothing that prevents any of us from exercising our brains and becoming the best that we can be. In all seriousness, it’s not just about being sexy and attractive to others. It’s about feeling confident and learning more and more every day. Life is made of experiences so why not combine pleasure with learning? It’s a win-win situation.

How do you keep your brain active?
